GDES2014 – Week 3 – CBeebies, I Can Cook

GDES2014 – Childrens Book Design

This weeks task was to create a double page spread for CBeebies “I Can Cook”, which introduces children to cooking.

I started with initial research of the CBeebies “I can Cook” section of their website, which has a number of simple recipies for children to follow with an adult.  PDF’s are available for each of the recipies, so I looked at Mini veggie burgers with salsa, which can be found by following this link:

We were also asked to watch this video, which gives an insight into the way children respond and interact with the reipies, as well as giving plenty of visual clues to the “style” of CBeebies.

I then used these visual clues in the execution of my final design.

  • I used the CBeebies logo to establish the colour palette (similar to what can already be seen in their existing PDF’s).
  • I used simple flat colours for the background, creating a tablecloth pattern in Illustrator to give the impression that the recipe is taking place in the kitchen.
  • All text bubbles are intention miss-shapen to give a child like appearance. They are then arranged in a logical, but interesting sequential manner.
  • I chose a typeface which is more “hand drawn” in it’s style.  It gives a warm and friendly feeling whilst using character shapes that children use when learning to read and write.
  • I also included a couple of “fun facts” that offer children a little more insight into where food comes from.
  • I incorporated the CBeebies logo to give the spread identity.

Overall I am happy with my final spread.  I think it contains all of the necessary information, has good visual order and is fun.  I think children would find it informative, fun and easy to follow.
